Inbound traffic to Quincy continues to be rerouted to the Bayview Bridge. Parts of Bonansinga Drive are also closed due to flooding. Rapidly rising waters on the Mississippi have left several areas in and around Hannibal flooded. All of the city's flood gates were put in place on June 30, and water has continued to rise. Popular attractions like the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sawyer's Creek have been forced to close because of the flood, and Highway 79 is closed just past the Mark Twain Cave. In Hannibal, the Mississippi is expected to crest at 26.7 feet early Wednesday afternoon.
I was going through some old digital photos and came across this picture I took back in 2009. As I recall, this particular character seemed to be showing up all around Hannibal. I can think of at least three separate places where I saw the same design, including this old fence. I've always wondered if this character was an original creation, or an established character. Anyone know?
A train derailed along Quincy's riverfront on Monday night. KHQA is reporting that a problem with the tracks switch is what lead to the accident. Cleanup crews were on the scene early Tuesday morning to begin removing the derailed cars. Both Bonansinga Drive and Front Street are open to traffic. See photos taken early this morning from the scene.
